Calling all friends and supporters of IMHO USA and Assist RR UK

We are raising funds to save the sight of more than 1000 of Sri Lanka’s poorest people and we would be very grateful for your support.

People who are destined to become irreversibly blind in one or both eyes without the cataract surgeries they themselves have no hope of affording or accessing.

Diabetic Center, Jaffna and Batticaloa Teaching Hospital

  • The first Diabetic Center to be established in Sri Lanka
  • Diabetic Center was opened at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital (JTH) in 2009 and located in Jaffna District in the Northern Province: IMHO renovated this unit, purchased needed equipment, paid lab tests and staff salaries
  • From 2015-2019: 27,741 patients were treated by this center…

Expected to treat 3,000 new patients/year

Renal Dialysis Service

  • Purchased three Renal Dialysis machines (cost of $24,456) to provide dialysis at the Chavakachcheri, Thellipalai and Point Pedro Base Hospitals, all in the Northern Province
  • Currently approximately 6 dialysis performed/day at these three hospitals
  • IMHO ensure filters for the dialysis units at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital- currently this unit perform 26 Dialysis per day…

Educational Projects: Kilinochchi Education Development Trust (KEDT)

  • Support two Science Education Centers – Teaching 543 students in Science, Math & English in the Killinochchi District, Northern Province

    ○Viswamadu  Science Center was built & supported since 2015          ○Murrippu Center built  and supported since 2017
  • Supports Computer Center at Bharathipuram Education Center since 2019
  • In addition to education, IMHO also supports Oral Health Program for school children in Killinochchi District in Northern Province carried out by KEDT.

Interventional Cardiology Unit, Jaffna Teaching Hospital

  • High Dependency Cardiac Unit Established in 2008
  • Cardiac Catherization Lab was established in 2010, at Jaffna Teaching Hospital in the Northern Province
  • From 2012-2019: 25,594 patients were admitted to Cardiology Ward and 5,091 to Critical Care Unit.

Trauma/Suicide Prevention Program & Trauma Registry

  • Awareness program to prevent road-accident starting 2019 – out reach to general public, school children, and auto drivers
  • IMHO fund development of Software and 5 laptop computers for Data collection and analysis of road-accidents, trauma injury and suicides.
  • Currently, data are collection at the Hospitals at Jaffna, Thellipallai, Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya from the Northern Province

Batticaloa Child Psychiatric Center

  • Child center for all the Pediatric patients at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital in the Eastern Province – cost Rs 19,78,772 (US $10,754)
  • Child psychiatric center treats 10 in-patient and 20 out-patient/ month
  • Treat children with Thalassemia from Eastern District

In-Patient Mental Health Units

  • Kalmunai Base hospital: IMHO in partnership with WHO built this unit in 2005 – currently treat 100+ in-patient and 800 out-patient per month
  • Vavuniya District General Hospital: Built in 2008 and currently treats 458 in-patient with 166 ECT sessions (in 2019)
  • Negambo Base Hospital: Support renovation in 2010 and now treats 70 in-patient/month

Mathavam: A center for Neuro-Developmental Disorders

  • Established this center in 2014
  • Treated 311 special-needs children
  • Currently provide active therapy for 45 children
  • Follow-up treatment to 139 children
  • This center is currently taken over by the Health Department buy IMHO fund salaries to 2 Therapists and 1 cleaning staff at the cost of $388/month

Mullaitivu District General Hospital

  • Supports Infertility Treatment Program – 20 patients/month (cost of $4700)
  • Materials for the Obstetric wards (cost of $1,819)
  • Donated a Ultrasound Scanner (cost of $30,000)
  • Support repair of the roof
  • Located in the Northern Province

Dental Clinic for Poor School Children

  • Space identified and dental equipment are available
  • Renovation of the building cost $ 3,000
  • Dental Therapist will be in charge at this facility – but will work with nearby hospital dentist
  • Benefits children from 51 schools in Maskeliya area in the Up-Country Eastern Province

Uyirilai – Center for Spinal Cord Injury

  • Working with center since 2012
  • Purchased 30 Three-wheelers for paraplegic
  • Built 30 special-need Toilets, 3 more pending, 3 wells for special-needs
  • Support Mobile clinics at this center for paraplegic
  • Built Medication room for paraplegic residence at this center in Mankulam, Northern Province
  • Support weekly visit by a nurse to this center $135/month

Jaffna Jaipur Center

  • Provide mobility devices, wheel chairs, artificial limbs, physiotherapy, etc.
  • Educational grants for children with physical disability
  • Public Outreach Programs at the cost of $15,000/year
  • Last year IMHO provided funds to support more than 500 disable patients

English Teacher Training Program

  • ABOE Program: Grade 1-2 teachers – 400 are trained
  • Reading Bee program to promote reading to grades 3, 4 & 5. This project is in part supported by Gnanam Foundation: Foundation committed $31,000 to date
  • Ongoing training for 200 Secondary School Teachers to teach Grade 6 to GCE O/L (Grade 10) students in Northern Province and Up-Country
  • Initial allocation – $20,000

National College of Education

  • Located in the Northern Province.
  • Expected to train 392 student teachers
  • Request to purchase of 30 laptops, Wi-Fi connection and digital storage Units
  • Total Budget – $13,239

Iniya Vazhvu Illam – Home for disabled children

  • Supports 56 vision or hearing impaired children, age between 5 to 22 years
  • This center located in Puthukkuddiyirupu, Mullativy District, Northern Province and is in operation since 1997
  • Requested computer, braille machine, steel cupboard and iron safe at the total cost of $3,097
  • IMHO fund all instruments except the braille machines

Community Empowerment: Re-Building Kancharamoddai

  • Border village in Nedunkerni District in Northern Province
  • Support resettlement of 32 – 39 displaced families returning from Refugee camp
  • Built 27 toilets and water pump
  • At the process support connecting electricity to this village

Mobile Medical Clinics

  • Enable health services to Pansenai, Koolavaddy Primary Care Centers built in 2006
  • These centers are renovated through the Regional Director of Health Services, Batticaloa District in the Eastern Province
  • Currently supporting medical clinics in Pansenai, Koolavaddy, Pulipanchakal and Vahaneri Villages at the cost of $ 766/month

Establishment of Dental Clinic at Pulipanchakal

  • Scheduled to open in October 2020
  • Clinic Renovation of this dental clinic – $750
  • Dental Chair cost Rs 542,500 ($2,948)

Kalmunai Base Hospital

  • Staff Salary for the Diabetic Center (cost of $271/month)
  • Renovation of the indoor and outdoor Play Area for children (cost of $ 3,000)

Women Cooperative Empowerment Network

  • In May 2019. IMHO provided $ 1,770 to purchase equipment for empowerment of women in this network
  • Located in the Up-Country

New Arrow Center -An Empowerment Project

  • The center received one acre land to build facility to house a weaving mill that is expected to employ 150 women
  • Each women is expected to earn Rs 1000/day
  • Located in the Northern Province

Pre-School Education

  • Support training 187 teachers from Northern Province and 50 teachers from Up-Country
  • Renovated 9 schools and built 1 school at the Up-Country                  ○Completed two schools and other schools are pending
  • Approximately 2,000 school children will be supported
  • Estimated budget – $40,000/year

Caring Hands Project

  • Assisting 230 children, mostly orphan girls living with grandparents or single parents in the Northern Province.
  • The project support children education costing $150 to support a child per year
  • Total cost of $30,000/year

Clean Water Project at Pallachchenai

  • Building two 2,000 liter water tanks
  • Support maintenance of these tanks
  • The project expected to cost Rs 65,000 ($360)
  • Located in the rural area in the Northern Province

Higher Education Scholarship to Under-Privileged Students

  • Awarded scholarship for 133 students (Rs. 2,500/month) to cover undergraduate tuition plus travel allowances
  • Project sponsored by Nadarajah Foundation
  • Total cost of this program – $21,847
  • Additional awards also to 15 volunteer teachers (Rs.15,000/month)
  • Total cost of the project is $ 14,673/year

Reading Groups for Children Age between 6 - 16

  • To date created 48 groups
  • Program support 912 children
  • Need funds to purchase books and materials for reading assessment
  • Support children in the Northern Province and Up-Country

Improve Educational Infrastructure - Smart Board

  • Improve schools in the Up-Country
  • Project partnered with Ratnam Foundation, UK
  • Smart Board ($ 790/each) donated to Fairlawn (TMV) School and Gartmore (TMV) Secondary school
  • In the process of donating to 3 more schools

Secondary Education to under-privileged students in Up-Country

  • Salary and travelling allowance for 5 volunteer teachers
  • English Enrichment Program. To date, produced 10% increase in O/L English pass rate – cost $ 1,700/year
  • Education assessment for 24,000 children in Hatton (Total cost $ 2,700/year)

Women Empowerment Program: Women Saving Group

  • Created saving groups in 2016 for women in the Up-Country
  • To-date 881 women members have created 60 groups
  • They have saved Rs 6,009,900 ($ 32,662) to date
  • Opened their first store in March 2019
  • This store is self sufficient – made profit of Rs 2,399,735 ($12,972) in 2019

Supply Clean Water

  • Built fresh water supply to 8 schools in Muskeliya in Up-Country
  • Nallathanneer TMV & Gouruvilla TMV have been completed (cost $ 8,000)
  • Building water supply to Dikoya TMV in collaboration with Anpuneri Foundation
  • Received a request to build water and sanitary facilities to Vipulananda TMV (cost $ 2,340)

Sanitation Project

  • To-date built 406 Toilets in poor living in the Up-Country
  • Project partnered with World Vision and Rotary Club
  • Built sanitation facilities to 8 Schools (cost $250 – $300)
  • Received several more requests

Community Empowerment: Rebuilding Parankiyamadu village

  • Located in Valaichenai in the Eastern Province
  • Resettle 155 families returning from refugee camp – 122 fishing families are now working as laborers because of lack of fishing equipment
  • CHRF, UK is building 35 wells in this village
  • Need to build 44 houses ($1,630/house) and fishing equipment (total cost $ 71,720)
  • Need to built 43 Toilets ($271/toilet) – total cost $ 11,653
  • Need to purchase 6 boats to support 30 families ($ 3,260/boat) and 10 nets to support 5 families (total cost $ 19,560)

Community Empowerment: Restoring Mavadi Ammanputhukadu

  • Resettlement of returning families from the refugee camp
  • Located in the rural area in Killinochchi district in the Northern Province

Education Resource Centre for Special Needs Children

  • Located in Kottagala in the Up-Country
  • Rent, staff training, staff salary and other expenses – cost $6000 per year
  • Center is the umbrella of MENCAFEP (Mentally Handicapped Children & Families Education Project)
  • Work closely with the Social Services Department and the local Pediatric Health Facility

Computer Program at Karadiyanaru TMV school

    • Establish computer program at Karadiyanaru MTV and 5 other schools, Batticaloa West, Eastern Province
    • Project fund salary for a computer teacher and for Wi-Fi connection
    • Teach 120 students at Grade 8 and Grade 9:

                     1 school 120 children/3 months –  Rs. 34,200 ($185)
