Increasing the University Admission (IUA) Project

An inauguration ceremony of the Increasing University Admission Project was held at Batticaloa West Education Zone on 31st of August 2023.This is a fully funded project by IMHO-USA and 400 students studying in Arts and Commerce stream, who are sitting for the GCE-AL exam in 2023 will benefit. Three practice exams and a final a seminar by experts in 17 subjects will be included. Zonal Director with DDEE, Country Director, IMHO-USA and Principals participated in this ceremony. IMHO-USA plans to conduct this project for 3000 students from Central and Sabragamuwa province and 500 students from North Western Provincial schools.

The Penney Family & Team Solihull’s next ultra-challenge to raise funds for clean water wells

  • USA Fundraising Goal of $20,000

IMHO USA, Assist RR UK and Well-Being (Sri Lanka) will work in partnership to raise funds, identify those most in need, implement the building of water wells and deliver on their efficacy.

We will also partner with the Agricultural Faculty of Jaffna University to provide the beneficiaries with seed packages and training in optimising the growth of high yield crops for personal and livelihood benefits.

A typical shallower dug-out well currently costs about $600 and a deeper tubed borehole well costs approximately $1200.

Should individual or family donors sponsor a well in full, we will include a naming plaque and send photos in return.The Board of IMHO USA will very generously match everything you donate, up to $20,000. This paves the way for us to double our impact, if we can reach our target

Donation of Cataract Surgery consumables

  • Donation of Cataract Surgery consumables including 100 lenses to Jaffna Teaching Hospital. This is phase 1 of the Cataract surgery project of IMHO USA. A total of 500 surgeries will be done in Jaffna. So far 67 have been done in Kilinochchi, 25 in Nawalapitiya with 50 more pending, 100 done in Kalmunai with 100 more pending. Very many thanks to our donors, the surgeons, their teams and the institutions for their help and cooperation in curing the needlessly blind. May 25th 2022.

Diabetic Center, Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

  • The first Diabetic Center to be established in Northern Province.
  • Diabetic Center was opened at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital (JTH) in 2009. IMHO renovated this unit, purchased needed equipment, paid for lab tests and staff salaries.

The Penney Family and Team Solihull are Raising Funds For Over 1000 Cataract Surgeries.

 

We are aiming to raising $100,000 in total to save the sight of over 1000 of Sri Lanka’s poorest people and we would be very grateful for your support.

People who are destined to become irreversibly blind in one or both eyes without the cataract surgeries they themselves have no hope of affording or accessing.

Educational Projects: Kilinochchi Education Development Trust (KEDT).

  • Support two Science Education Centers – Teaching 543 students in Science, Math & English in the Killinochchi District, Northern Province.

    ○Viswamadu  Science Center was built & supported since 2015.          
    ○Murrippu Center built  and supported since 2017.
  • Supports Computer Center at Bharathipuram Education Center since 2019.

Interventional Cardiology Unit, Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

  • High Dependency Cardiac Unit Established in 2008.
  • Cardiac Catherization Lab was established in 2010, at Jaffna Teaching Hospital in the Northern Province.
  • From 2012-2019: 25,594 patients were admitted to Cardiology Ward and 5,091 to Critical Care Unit.

Mullaitivu District General Hospital.

  • Supports Infertility Treatment Program – 20 patients/month (cost of $4700).
  • Materials for the Obstetric wards (cost of $1,819).
  • Donated an Ultrasound Scanner (cost of $30,000).
  • Support repair of the roof.

Mathavam: A center for Neuro-Developmental Disorders.

  • This center was established in 2014 by IMHO.
  • Has treated 311 special-needs children.
  • Currently provide active treatment for 45 children.
  • Follow-up treatment for 139 children.
  • This center is currently taken over by the Health Department but IMHO continues to fund salaries to 2 Therapists and 1 cleaning staff at the cost of $388/month.

Uyirilai – Center for Spinal Cord Injury.

  • Working with spinal cord injured since 2012.
  • Purchased 30 Three-wheelers for the paraplegics.
  • Built 30 special-need Toilets, 3 more pending and 3 wells.
  • Support Mobile clinics at this center for the spinal cord injured.
  • Built Medication room for paraplegics in residence at this center in Mankulam.
  • Support daily visit by a nurse and physical therapist.to this center $135/month.

Computer Program at Karadiyanaru TMV school.

  • Establish computer program at Karadiyanaru MTV and 5 other schools, Batticaloa West, Eastern Province.
  • Project fund salary for a computer teacher and for Wi-Fi connection.
  • Teach 120 students at Grade 8 and Grade 9.

English Teacher Training Program.

  • ABOE Program: Grade 1-2 teachers – 400 are trained.
  • Reading Bee program to promote reading to grades 3, 4 & 5.
  • Ongoing training for 200 Secondary School Teachers to teach Grade 6 to GCE O/L (Grade 10) students in Northern Province and Up-Country.
  • Initial allocation – $20,000.

Jaffna Jaipur Center.

  • Provide mobility devices, wheel chairs, artificial limbs, physiotherapy, etc.
  • Educational grants for children with physical disability.
  • Public Outreach Programs at the cost of $15,000/year.
  • Last year IMHO provided funds to support more than 500 disable patients.

Community Empowerment: Re-Building Kancharamoddai.

  • Border village in Nedunkerni District in Northern Province.
  • Support resettlement of 32 – 39 displaced families returning from Refugee camp.
  • Built 27 toilets and water pump.
  • At the process support connecting electricity to this village.

National College of Education.

  • Located in the Northern Province.
  • Expected to train 392 student teachers
  • Request to purchase of 30 laptops, Wi-Fi connection and digital storage Units
  • Total Budget – $13,239

Primary Care Centers.

  •  Primary Care Centers built in 2006 at Panchenai and Koolavaddy
  • These centers are renovated through the Regional Director of Health Services, Batticaloa District in the Eastern Province
  • Currently supporting Medical clinics in Panchenai, Koolavedy, Vaharai and Pulipanchakal at the cost of $ 766/month.

Establishment of Dental Clinic at Pulipanchakal.

  • Scheduled to open in October 2020.
  • Clinic Renovation of this dental clinic – $750.
  • Dental Chair cost Rs 542,500 ($2,948).

Kalmunai Base Hospital.

  • Staff Salary for the Diabetic Center (cost of $271/month).
  • Renovation of the indoor and outdoor Play Area for children (cost of $ 3,000).

Education Resource Centre for Special Needs Children.

  • Located in Kottagala in the Up-Country.
  • Rent, staff training, staff salary and other. expenses – cost $6000 per year.
  • Center is the umbrella of MENCAFEP (Mentally Handicapped Children & Families Education Project).
  • Work closely with the Social Services Department and the local Pediatric Health Facility.

Caring Hands Project.

  • Caring Hands project is currently carried out in the Upcountry benefiting the underprivileged children.
  • The project support children education costing $150 to support a child per year.
  • Total cost of $35,000/year.

Pre-School Education.

  • Support training 187 teachers from Northern Province and 50 teachers from Up-Country.
  • Renovated 9 schools and built 1 school at the Up-Country .                 ○Completed two schools and other schools are pending.
  • Approximately 2,000 school children will be supported.
  • Estimated budget – $40,000/year.

Improve Educational Infrastructure - Smart Board.

  • A smart board is an interactive whiteboard that fuses the capabilities of a data projector and a traditional whiteboard. Research demonstrates that smart boards improve organization, clarity, interest, and overall satisfaction among students in classrooms. IMHO USA has provided two smart boards to schools in the Northern Province and two smart boards to schools in the Central Province. Another fifteen smart boards have been ordered for schools in these provinces. Each board costs $1578 (RS 300,000). IMHO partnered with the Ratnam Foundation UK to raise funds for the smart boards. IMHO is currently seeking funds to expand this project and provide even more smart boards to other deserving schools

Reading Groups for Children Age between 6 - 16.

  • To date created 48 groups.
  • Program support 912 children.
  • Need funds to purchase books and materials for reading assessment.
  • Support children in the Up-Country.

Women Empowerment Program: Women Saving Group.

  • Created saving groups in 2016 for women in the Up-Country.
  • To-date 881 women members have created 60 groups.
  • They have saved Rs 6,009,900 ($ 32,662) to date.
  • Opened their first store in March 2019.
  • This store is self sufficient – made profit of Rs 2,399,735 ($12,972) in 2019.

Secondary Education to under-privileged students in Up-Country.

  • Salary and travelling allowance for 5 volunteer teachers.
  • English Enrichment Program. To date, produced 10% increase in O/L English pass rate – cost $ 1,700/year.
  • Education assessment for 24,000 children in Hatton (Total cost $ 2,700/year).

Sanitation Project.

  • To-date built 406 Toilets in poor living in the Up-Country.
  • Project partnered with World Vision and Rotary Club.
  • Built sanitation facilities to 8 Schools (cost $250 – $300).
  • Received several more requests.

Supply Clean Water.

  • Built fresh water supply to 11 schools in Muskeliya in Up-Country.
  • Nallathanneer TMV & Gouruvilla TMV have been completed (cost $ 8,000).
  • Building water supply to Dikoya TMV in. collaboration with Anpuneri Foundation.
  • Received a request to build water and sanitary facilities to Vipulananda TMV (cost $ 2,340).
  • Received requests from many schools for help with running water systems.

Early Chilhood Development Project.

Early Childhood Development Project by IMHO USA. 1st day of the training of preschool teachers in Vavuniya North. Nine schools were renovated and one school built and 187 teachers are being trained at an estimated cost of$40.000/.

Children's Heart Surgery project with The Rotary Club of Kandy.

The International Medical Health Organization and The Rotary Club of Kandy have joined hands to provide heart surgery for children with congenital heart defects at a cost of $1250 US dollars per child. Congenital Heart Defects are the most common birth defect and leading cause of death during the first year of a child’s life. In Sri Lanka it is estimated that for every 1000 newborns there are six to eight children with Congenital Heart Defects. This will be an ongoing project.

Homes for the Estate Workers in Devon, Nuwara Eliya.

IMHO USA partnering with World Vision is planning to build homes in Devon, in the Nuwara Eliya District for families employed in tea estates as tea-pluckers/laborers and are faced with many challenges due to poor income, inadequate healthcare, challenges in education and insufficient access to welfare service. They lack proper housing. Partnering with World Vision IMHO is planning to build 25 houses, and IMHO’s share would be $1755 for each house.

Mr. Subramaniam Krishnakumar, Country Director IMHO visiting schools in Vavuniya District assessing the needs including teacher training and the need for smart boards. He visited 12 schools and the estimated cost for the project would be $12,000.00
