Increasing the University Admission (IUA) Project

An inauguration ceremony of the Increasing University Admission Project was held at Batticaloa West Education Zone on 31st of August 2023.This is a fully funded project by IMHO-USA and 400 students studying in Arts and Commerce stream, who are sitting for the GCE-AL exam in 2023 will benefit. Three practice exams and a final a seminar by experts in 17 subjects will be included. Zonal Director with DDEE, Country Director, IMHO-USA and Principals participated in this ceremony. IMHO-USA plans to conduct this project for 3000 students from Central and Sabragamuwa province and 500 students from North Western Provincial schools.

Smart board training for 54 teachers from 14 schools from North Western Province

Smart board training for 54 teachers from 14 schools from North Western Province was held on 1st and 2nd of April 2023 at Puttalam Hindu Central College and St. Mary’s TMV for the Primary and the secondary teachers. 14 Schools were the beneficiaries of the smart boards and the pen drives with the software. This is an IMHO USA and Ratnam Foundation (UK) program.

52 students from Kilinochchi South Zone participated in a science practical workshop

52 students from Kilinochchi South Zone (27 Students from Kl/ Puthumuripu Vikneswara Vidyalayam and 25 students from Kl/ Selvanagar GTMS) participated in a science practical workshop held on 18th and 19th, March 2023 at Field Work Centre, Thondaimanaru. Subjects included Electronics, Electricity, Chemistry Biology, Astronomy and studies about ecosystems. This is the Second science Practical workshop in the Science promotion programme funded by IMHO-USA.

Smart Classroom Opening Ceremony at Ilavalai Roman Catholic Tamil Boys (123 students) and Kadduvanpulam Maha Vidyalayam (181) students). Mrs. Lavanya Suganthan DDE- Planning, Valikamam, Zonal Office, Mr. Athavan ISA, Valikamam Zone and Mr. S. Krishnakumar, Country Director, IMHO-USA participated in the opening ceremony. This is a combined project by IMHO USA and Ratnam Foundation UK. March 21, 2023.

English enrichment program classes at the Mocha, Gouravilla and Bloomfield T M V Centers. 580 O/L students from Hatton Zone Division 3 will benefit from this IMHO USA Program. Feb. 9th 2023

Residential SciencePractical Workshop for O/L students.

A total of 54 GCE O/L students from Varani Central College and Vidathalpalai Kamalasini school participated in a Residential Science Practical Workshop at FWC Centre on 5th and 6th of April 2023. This is the third of a combined project by IMHO-USA and FWC Thondaimanaru.

Six days Residential Activity Based Skill Development workshop for preschool teachers

Six days Residential Activity Based Skill Development workshop held in February 2023 for preschool teachers at Northern Province PICTET Centre, Marukkarampalai. 48 teachers from Vavuniya North and Madhu Zones participated. IMHO-USA implemented these preschool education projects with the support of the Zonal departments in Vavuniya North and Madhu zones. 8 Model preschools developed in these two zones last year and 6 model schools are going to be developed at Madhu zone this year. With the Ratnam Foundation (UK) IMHO USA has a preschool project in Kilinochchi North.

Full Moon Day Celebrations of the preSchool Children.

Monthly Full Moon Day event of pre-schools in Kilinochchi North Education Zone was held on 08.02.2023 at The Rangan Pre-School under the auspices of the International Medical Health Organization and The Ratnam Foundation in a grand manner. . The people of this area are very poor. More than 300 people were present and it was well received by them. The cultural program of the children and the teachers were phenomenal.

Closing Ceremony of English language Methodology Training workshop for 33 Teachers of English from Northern Province

Closing Ceremony of English language Methodology Training workshop for 33 Teachers of English from Northern Province held at STEPS Institute. It’s an IMHO-USA Project collaborated with the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and Sports, Northern Province. English language training for 100 teachers and Methodology training for 40 teachers have already been completed successfully by IMHO-USA recently. Mrs. Abiramy Parthipan, Director STEPS Institute and Mr. S Krishnakumar, Country Director IMHO-USA participated in this event as Guests today. Feb. 17th 2023

IMHO USA and Thondamanaru Field Work Center organized a two day science practical residential workshop for 56 students and teachers of Kilinochchi Vivekananda School GCE-OL class. The students got first-hand exposure and experience in Electronics, Biology, Chemistry and Electromagnetism. Mrs. Jeyalaxmy Manicavasagam Principal and teachers and Mr. S. Krishnakumar, Country Director IMHO USA were instrumental in organizing this program

Handing over Laptops as a part of The Smart Board Project.

12 Laptops were handed over to the Valikamam Zonal schools’ system as a part of the Smartboard Project on 9th of December 2022 at Manipay Suthumalai Simyabarathy school. Principals from 12 schools received the Laptops from the Chief Guest Mr. Murali Ramalingam, Treasurer, IMHO-USA on this occasion. Mrs. Lavanya, Deputy Director, Planning and Mr. S. Krishnakumar, Country Director, IMHO-USA also participated. Teachers training by ethaksalava team will be organized within two weeks. This is a combined project by IMHO-USA and Ratnam Foundation-UK.

Activity Based Skill Development Workshop for Palai Division Preschool teachers from Killinochi North Zone commencing on 28th December 2022. This is a six days program under the Early childhood Development Project in Palai Division by IMHO-USA and Ratnam Foundation-UK.

Two days Smart board training workshop for 60 teachers

Two days Smart board training workshop for 60 teachers commenced on 6th of January 2023 at Manipay Ladies College. IMHO-USA and Ratnam Foundation-UK provided smart boards for 12 schools in Valikamam Education Zone and one school from Jaffna Education Zone. 42 teachers from those schools attended this workshop and 18 teachers from another 13 schools also attended. Mrs. Lavanya Suhanthan DDE Planning and Mrs. Gnanasothy Mahendran, ISA IT from Valikamam Education Zone and Mr. S. Krishnakumar, Country Director, IMHO-USA organized this workshop.

Inauguration of Killinochi North (Kandawalai and Palai) as a Model Zone for Early Education.

This project is the brainchild of Director of Education Killinotchci North, and is being sponsored by Ratnam Foundation (UK) and IMHO USA.
1520 students from 70 preschools will participate and benefit. Jan. 18th 2023.

Meeting with teachers in charge of 52 pre-schools in the Poonagary Area.

Meeting with teachers in charge of 52 pre-schools in the Poonagary Area of Kilinochchi South Education Zone regarding providing food supplements to the preschool students. About 1000 children from 52 preschools will be provided a meal per day, it will cost $180/ day for all 1000 children (Rs 65/ meal). This is a joint project with Ratnam Foundation UK. Very many thanks to Mr. Yuvarasa ADE for his dedication to implement this project. July 15th 2022.

Food for Life program formally inaugurated at Sivapathakalayaham Vidyalayam in Kilinochchi South Zone funded by IMHO-USA today. 700 selected secondary school students from 5 schools will benefit through this program. Mr. R. Varathesewaran, Secretary, Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and Sports, NP, Mr. C. Kamalrajan, Zonal Director, Kilinochchi South Zone, Mr. B. Jeyaharan, Divisional Secretary, Karaichi Division, Mrs. Abiramy Parthiban, DDE, MOE, NP, Mr. S. Krishnakumar, Country Director, IMHO-USA, Zonal Staff and the school Principals participated. ~ August 2022.

Nutritional supplements to school children.

Nutritional supplements to school children. IMHO USA with World vision is providing nutritional supplements to 466 children from 18 preschools in the Kandavalai district of Kilinochchi and independently is providing for 700 children from 5 schools in the same area. We are planning to implement the food supplements during the weekends and holidays. Many thanks to Mr. S. Krishnakumar, IMHO Country Director SL, for visiting these areas during this period of fuel crisis and implementing this program. June 28th 2022.

Nutritional supplements to preschool children.

Nutritional supplements to preschool children. IMHO-USA funding a mid-day meal program at Ervurpattu Division in Batticaloa West Zone. This will benefit 260 preschool children from Pankudavelli, Karadianaru, Kayankuda and Chenkaladi area preschools. This Program will continue until the end of this year. The nutrition program for pre-school children was initiated by the Batticaloa West Zonal Director of Education MS. Akila Kanagasooriyam at Sivatha Pokkadi Mariyal Pre-School. June 6th 2022.

Educating the educators. 25 preschool teachers from Madhu and Manthai West Division participated in the residential training program from June 2nd to June 5th 2022.

Providing for Preschools in Manthai and Madu.

Providing for Preschools in Manthai and Madu. Mr. Subramaniam Krishnakumar Country Director IMHO LK, after a fact-finding visit has selected 3 Preschools from Madhu and 3 Preschools from Manthai west to be promoted as model schools. The schools will be renovated, given furniture, learning materials, indoor and outdoor play equipment and their teachers will be trained as well. A total of about 700 students will benefit from this project. An IMHO USA initiative. March 18th 2022.

IMHO USA with the Ratnam Foundation (UK) and Thenmaradchi Foundation (Canada) have provided 10 schools in Thenmaradchi with Smart Boards and have trained 30 zonal staff on Smart Board education. April 19th 2022.

Present economic conditions providing adequate nutrition for their children.

Present economic conditions and loss of jobs in the farming and labor community has prevented many parents from providing adequate nutrition for their children. Preschool children are at a crucial age with regard to their mental and physical development and lack of nutrition at this formative period inhibits growth and psychosocial development. IMHO USA is doing a nutrition project in the upcountry areas, costing 20 cents/day/child. 159 preschoolers will benefit. June 6th. 2022.

IMHO Resource Team very successfully conducted a workshop.

Organized by Mr. S. Krishnakumar Country Director IMHO LK, Mr. Sutharson ADE, English and IMHO Resource Team very successfully conducted a workshop for 30 teachers from Killinochi at the Ariyalai Sarvodaya center. This program will empower the teachers to implement Fun Reading Bee Program to improve the English language reading ability of 3rd to 5th graders. March 2022.

Principal Mr. K. Manimarban, Deputy Principal, sectional heads and teachers participated in this event. Dec. 2021.

Improving the standard of Pre School education in the Central Province. Graduation Ceremony of 55 children from 11 preschools supported by IMHO USA going to kindergarten. The function was presided by Mr. Chandrasegaram IMHO education project coordinator for the Central Province. March 30th 2022.

Planning Teacher Training.

IMHO-USA County Director Mr. S. Krishnakumar and the Field staff Mr. Yasotharan discussed Education projects in the Planning Meeting held at Vavuniya North Zonal Office. Mr. Lenin Arivalakan, Zonal Director of Education, Miss Lathanki, Deputy Director, Development and the Zonal staff participated. Discussions included Teacher training in the ABOE program for Grade 1 and 2 teachers, OPEnE program, Developing science education programs and Science Quick Reference books for the GCW (O/L) students.

National College of Education.

  • Located in the Northern Province.
  • Expected to train 392 student teachers.
  • Request to purchase of 30 laptops, Wi-Fi connection and digital storage Units.
  • Total Budget – $13,239.

Pre-School Education.

  • Support training 187 teachers from Northern Province and 50 teachers from Up-Country.
  • Renovated 9 schools and built 1 school at the Up-Country.                  ○Completed two schools and other schools are pending.
  • Approximately 2,000 school children will be supported.
  • Estimated budget – $40,000/year.

Extending our Educational activities to the Sabaragamuwa Province.

Extending our Educational activities to the Sabaragamuwa Province. IMHO USA sponsored O/L review classes for students from Nivithigala Division/ Sabaragamuwa Province was started today under the leadership of Mr. Chandrasekaran, Retired Deputy Director of Education. This will be a 30-day course. Science hand books were also distributed to the students. Mrs. W.H.N.H Dayananda Zonal Education Director, Mrs. Manogaran Provincial Additional Director of Education also took part in the event.

Reading Groups for Children Age between 6 - 16.

  • To date created 48 groups.
  • Program support 912 children.
  • Need funds to purchase books and materials for reading assessment.
  • Support children in the Northern Province and Up-Country.

Distribution of Science and Mathematics Hand Books.

IMHO USA has distributed 9600 Science hand books and 2500 Maths hand books to the O/ L students in the Central, North, East, Sabaragamuwa and Western Provinces. Mr. Krishnakumar, our Country Director, is planning to visit and distribute the books in Chilaw and Puttalam (North Central Province) by the end of this month. IMHO USA credits Mr. Subramaniam Krishnakumar for his dedication, hard work and enthusiasm in making this valuable project successful. Thank you very much Kris.

Secondary Education to under-privileged students in Up-Country.

  • Salary and travelling allowance for 5 volunteer teachers.
  • English Enrichment Program. To date, produced 10% increase in O/L English pass rate – cost $ 1,700/year.
  • Education assessment for 24,000 children in Hatton (Total cost $ 2,700/year).
  • Improve Educational Infrastructure – Smart Board.

IMHO-USA with Chavakachcheri Hindu College (CHC).

IMHO-USA with Chavakachcheri Hindu College (CHC), OBA has provided 700 Science Practice Books to the children in the Thenmaradchi Zone who are going to sit for the GCE(O/L) General Exam in May, 2022. Dr. Devacaanthan from IMHO-USA was the Chief Guest of this ceremony held on the 28th January 2022. Mr. Kirupaharan, Zonal Director, Mr. Kandeepan, DDE and the IMHO-Country Director Mr. Krishnakumar also participated. Science teachers from this zone and the students from CHC attended and received the books. Ms. Meesalai Veerasingam, Central College Science teacher delivered an analytical speech about this book and motivated the students. Mr. Sarvesvaran, Principal CHC and Mr. Thangavel, Principal KN GTMS planned and coordinated this function.

Education Resource Centre for Special Needs Children.

  • Located in Kottagala in the Up-Country.
  • Rent, staff training, staff salary and other expenses – cost $6000 per year.
  • Center is the umbrella of MENCAFEP (Mentally Handicapped Children & Families Education Project).
  • Work closely with the Social Services Department and the local Pediatric Health Facility.

English Teacher Training Program.

  • ABOE Program: Grade 1-2 teachers – 400 are trained.
  • Reading Bee program to promote reading to grades 3, 4 & 5.
  • Ongoing training for 200 Secondary School Teachers to teach Grade 6 to GCE O/L (Grade 10) students in Northern Province and Up-Country.
  • Initial allocation – $20,000.

Country Director of IMHO Visiting Schools in Vavuniya.

Mr. Subramaniam Krishnakumar, Country Director IMHO visiting schools in Vavuniya District assessing the needs including teacher training and the need for smart boards. He visited 12 schools and the estimated cost for the project would be $12,000.00.

Educational Projects: Kilinochchi Education Development Trust (KEDT).

  • Support two Science Education Centers – Teaching 543 students in Science, Math & English in the Killinochchi District, Northern Province.

    ○Viswamadu  Science Center was built & supported since 2015 .         
    ○Murrippu Center built  and supported since 2017.
  • Supports Computer Center at Bharathipuram Education Center since 2019.

Improve Educational Infrastructure - Smart Board.

  • A smart board is an interactive whiteboard that fuses the capabilities of a data projector and a traditional whiteboard. Research demonstrates that smart boards improve organization, clarity, interest, and overall satisfaction among students in classrooms. IMHO USA has provided two smart boards to schools in the Northern Province and two smart boards to schools in the Central Province. Another fifteen smart boards have been ordered for schools in these provinces. Each board costs $1578 (RS 300,000). IMHO partnered with the Ratnam Foundation UK to raise funds for the smart boards. IMHO is currently seeking funds to expand this project and provide even more smart boards to other deserving schools

Higher Education Scholarship to Under-Privileged Students.

  • Awarded scholarship for 133 students (Rs. 2,500/month) to cover undergraduate tuition plus travel allowances.
  • Project sponsored by Nadarajah Foundation
  • Total cost of this. program – $21,847
  • Additional awards also to 15 volunteer teachers (Rs.15,000/month).
  • Total cost of the project is $ 14,673/year.

Computer Program at Karadiyanaru TMV school.

  • Establish computer program at Karadiyanaru MTV and 5 other schools, Batticaloa West, Eastern Province.
    • Project fund salary for a computer teacher and for Wi-Fi connection.
    • Teach 120 students at Grade 8 and Grade 9.

Caring Hands Project.

  • Assisting 230 children, mostly orphan girls living with grandparents or single parents in the Northern Province.
  • The project support children education costing $150 to support a child per year.
  • Total cost of $30,000/year.

Early Chilhood Development Project.

Early Childhood Development Project by IMHO USA. 1st day of the training of preschool teachers in Vavuniya North. Nine schools were renovated and one school built and 187 teachers are being trained at an estimated cost of$40.000/.
